Prophecy is a hot topic among Christians, and rightfully so–the Bible is full of prophecy. Yet it is misunderstood. Too much of the attention paid to prophecy by evangelical Christians is centred around futuristic prophecy. And while the Bible does have much to say about the future, prophecy in general is much more concerned with one’s life in the present. Even glimpses of the future are always given to bring about some change in attitude or lifestyle in light of the reality that is yet to come.
Reading the prophetic works of the Old Testament will make plain that this was the true focus of God’s prophets. As Isaiah wrote:
make yourselves clean;
remove the evil of your deeds from before my eyes;
cease to do evil;
learn to do good;
bring justice to the fatherless;
plead the widow’s cause.” (Isaiah 1:16-17)
